Common Questions & Answers
Here you will find a simple list of important questions and answers on Reiki Healing.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese stress reduction and relaxation technique. It's based on the idea that a "Life Force Energy" flows through each of us. When your Life Force Energy is low, you are more likely to feel the effects of stress or to get sick. Reiki is a "hands-on" method of reducing stress, promoting relaxation and creating balance in ourselves. Accepting Reiki is accepting responsibility for ourselves and our actions. How does Reiki heal?

Reiki helps a person heal by reducing stress and promoting relaxation on a very deep level. When we are deeply relaxed our body's own ability to heal itself is activated. Reiki can bring a steady, gradual improvement into every aspect of your life.

What does a Reiki session feel like?

It may feel like warm, gentle sunshine flowing through you. One may "see" colors or simply feel a deep sense of peace and contentment. Reiki is a simple, safe method of healing - in fact it is SO simple that people are sometimes surprised at the deep level at which Reiki can heal. It can be very profound. Reiki is NOT a medicine and it does not replace modern medicine. It DOES support any healing methods a person may be using. At the very least, it is a gift of relaxation and stress reduction. Do I have to believe in Reiki for it to work?

No. Reiki is not a religion. It is not based on any belief system at all. Reiki simply works. What IS needed is an open attitude to receive and accept the Reiki energy and to be willing to work with it. Reiki will never cause harm. It is always for the highest and best good of the person receiving the energy. The person "giving" Reiki does not heal anyone. The person receiving the Reiki is the one responsible for working with the energy to help heal themselves. All healing begins with the self. It is the first step to healing the world. It is very empowering to others when we give ourselves permission to heal. As we take steps to heal ourselves, we are actually showing others how to do the same by our example. Therefore the phrase, "Heal yourself, heal the world" is in fact a very deep truth.

How long is a session and how long do the effects last?

The length varies depending on if a session is being done in a chair (approximately 20 - 30 minutes) or on a Reiki table (one hour). Reactions and effects are very personal and can be different for everyone. Some people have a great deal of energy, while others leave feeling a complete sense of peace and contentment, relaxed. Others have stated that they felt nothing at first, but noted changes a day or two later.

What do I do during a Reiki session?

You are asked to BE open, but you will DO nothing. You simply show up. You will be asked to remove your shoes and your watch and if you have any areas of pain or discomfort. The Reiki practitioner will want to do extra work in those painful areas. You are free to talk, if you wish, during the session. Some people take this as their time to just "relax and BE". This is a hands-on practice, so the person providing Reiki energy for you will have his/her hands on your physical body. There are seven major areas (energy centers) that are worked with, and those are the areas that are touched. If you prefer that your physical body NOT be touched, it is your responsibility to let the facilitator know, before s/he places her/his hands on you. Reiki can be done off the body just as easily. You will be asked to drink 6-8 glasses of water for at least three days after your session. This flushes toxins out of your system. A series of four sessions within a short period of time (normally about two weeks) is suggested, in order to begin receiving the greatest benefits from Reiki.

Does Reiki heal everyone?

Reiki heals anyone wishing to heal. In other words, if you are willing to work with the energy, it will work with you. Reiki does not force itself on anyone. It is an "all-knowing" energy that comes from "the Source" (whatever you call your higher source) and it knows where everyone needs to heal. However, one must be willing to heal, in order for Reiki to work. If you are willing, the Reiki's healing ability is limitless. One must be open to receive, regardless of what we are talking about in life. We attract to us that which we focus our attention on. In other words, if we focus on positive things (peace, contentment, feeling good), we will become peaceful, contented people who feel great, alive! If we focus on negativity (anger, resentment, frustrations), we will stay angry, resentful and frustrated. There is great wisdom in the phrase, "Ask and you shall receive".

Can anyone learn to do Reiki?

Absolutely! Reiki is everyone's birthright - you can learn to do Reiki in a one- or two-day class setting. Class size is limited to no more than five students in each class.
